Medicare CBSA Codes

medicare CBSA codes

What are they? Medicare CBSA codes are used to file accurate Medicare claims. 'CBSA' stands for 'Core-Based Statistical Areas.' Used by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), these codes are assigned per ZIP Code and is ultimately based on the county that the ZIP Code is in. Our file provides multiple records when the ZIP Code crosses multiple counties.

Very Important Note: this file isn't the same as our regular CBSA product which is based on one record per ZIP Code. The way Medicare uses CBSA codes is unique and they have exceptions to the rules when places are rural or smaller towns. We take care of those nuances so that you don't have to!

Note: on April 1, 2010, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) took effect which will give an additional 3% payment for home health services to patients in rural areas. Our product will show you if the patient is in a rural area or not.
